Decay Air Abrasion technology allows us to give you the most comfortable experience possible. If you’re uncomfortable with the use of a drill during your visit at our office, we can use this air technology in its place.

How Decay Air Abrasion Works

This minimally invasive technique sprays away the decay on your teeth safely and quickly. During the procedure, our instrument emits a fine stream of particles that gently and effectively remove the small particles of decay on your teeth. The stream of particles is made up of silica, aluminum oxide, or a baking soda mixture, all of which are completely safe for use. The process is quick and easy, and our dentist will simply remove the particles of decay with a rinse and suction method afterward. Because this is a drill-free option, most of the procedures won’t require anesthetic, so you’ll usually have a needle-free experience as well.

Advantages of Air Abrasion

Aside from simply creating a needle-free environment for your comfort, air abrasion has many benefits.

  • Generates no heat, sound, pressure, or vibration
  • Reduces the need for anesthesia, particularly if the cavity is shallow
  • Leaves much more of the healthy tooth tissue behind
  • Reduces the risk of micro-fracturing and chipping of the tooth
  • Allows your dentist to treat multiple sites in your mouth during a single visit

Air Abrasion Procedures

Air abrasion can be used in place of a drill in many procedures, such as:

  • Preparing a cavity for a filling
  • Preparing a tooth for bonding or sealants
  • Removing old composite restorations
  • Removing plaque and tooth decay
  • Removing superficial tooth stains and discolorations
